Balancing Translanguaging and Language Separation in Dual Programs

How do dual language teachers reconcile tensions between the established practice of separation of languages and increasing calls to incorporate translanguaging into instructional routines? How do we get the best of both worlds while staying true to our program’s language allocation.

ENROLL NOW >
  • Are you overwhelmed by the number of instructional frameworks for multilingual learners and wishing someone would give you a ‘cheat sheet’ to make things simpler and clearer?
  • Are you struggling with how to incorporate translanguaging into your dual language instructional routines while still maintaining fidelity to the language allocation plan?
  • Are you wondering how to help your students make cross-linguistic connections between content they learn in English and content they learn in the partner language?
  • Are you on your own to figure out how to integrate two monolingual language arts curricula in the same amount of time that monolingual teachers implement just one?
  • If you have a teaching partner, are you confused about how to work together as two parts of a single system?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, or are a program leader who knows their teachers feel this way, join our monthly book study for our new book Dual Language Tandem Teaching: Coordinating Instruction Across Languages Through Cross-Linguistic Pedagogies!

If you work with a partner, you will learn how to work as two parts of one system to foster a collaborative learning environment where you can reflect, share, and enhance your practices as dual language educators.
If you work in a self-contained classroom and provide instruction through both languages yourself, you will come away with clarity about how to use both languages with intentionality to meet program goals.
Program administrators and other program leaders will have the opportunity to talk with one another about how to support teachers as they implement these practices to strengthen cross-linguistic coordination.

In this monthly book study, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on the rich practices for cross-linguistic coordination presented in each chapter and discuss how to apply them in your school or classroom with the other participants and the authors.

Hey, We're Liz and Shera

Tandem Teachers, Thought Leaders, Passionate about Supporting Dual Language Educators

We met ten years ago when we were kindergarten Tandem Teachers at a dual language school in Costa Rica - Liz taught in Spanish and Shera taught in English. Liz had decades of experience in dual language research, teacher preparation, and program design, but had never taught in a dual language program, and had never taught kindergarten. ¿Cómo se dice reality check? Shera was new to dual language but was highly knowledgeable about early childhood education, with mad skills in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and community building.

Working through laughter and tears and building on the complementary strengths that we both brought to the partnership, we created a model for dual language instruction that we have been sharing through conference presentations, our book and blog, and online courses. In the meantime, Liz has returned to academia in the U.S. and has continued with dual language research and teacher preparation. Shera has stayed in Costa Rica and opened her own dual language program, gaining expertise in working with all of the elementary grades and serving as an administrator as well as a teacher.

In short, we form an unparalleled dream team in the realm of dual language coaching and consulting. Liz's extensive experience in research and teacher preparation brings academic rigor and depth to our partnership. Shera's immersion in the practicalities of dual language education offers invaluable real-world insights and solutions. Together, we seamlessly blend theoretical expertise with practical wisdom, enriching the dual language educational landscape through our combined efforts.
